Renee Hodgins, M.Ed., LPC, NCC began the Counseling & Educational Center with the intentions to provide an effective mental health, and psychoeducational facility that meets the needs of women, and particularly Black women, who often felt portrayed as “Superwomen.” These are the women who are expected to get the job done with less supports and resources than most. However, as resourceful women, we do successfully manage career, family, extended family, and community obligations and responsibilities quite well. There is a price that we pay when we allow ourselves to keep giving to others, and expecting little in return. That payoff is burnout, fatigue, stress, and depression.
The Superwoman was first identified by Michelle Wallace in her 1979 text, Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman.
That myth of strength against all odds, has even falsely characterized us as masculine, aggressive, even angry. While females in other ethnicities, are perceived as fragile, feminine, and needing protection.
Our therapeutic practice will focus on helping redefine your boundaries, as well as teaching self-care.
